CREDIT CARD PROCESSING

Can you tell if you have been handed a “bad” credit card?Credit card fraud is an enormous problem. Here are tips to help verify that a card is valid:

  • Wrong 4-Digit Number: The small four-digit number printed on the card above the account number must match the first four numbers of the embossed (raised) account number.
  • Missing 4-Digit Number: The small four digit number MUST be printed on the card above the account number.
  • Altered Signature Panel: You should not be able to see the word “VOID” on the signature panel. On Visa cards the word “VISA” should be repeatedly printed at an angle in blue, on a white background.
  • Different Signature: The signature on the sales slip and registration MUST match the signature on the back of the credit card. Compare these every time a credit card is accepted. If in doubt, ask for a photo I.D. with a signature (i.e. driver’s license).
  • Missing Signature: The signature must appear on the back of the card. If it is unsigned & the cardholder refuses to sign the card, the transaction should not be completed.
  • If you notice anything out of the ordinary, be suspicious & call your voice authorization center.
  • If you have concerns and you have completed the transaction and the cardholder is no longer present, contact your processing center immediately.

Remember you should always:

  • Hold the card throughout the entire transaction
  • Check the signature on the back to make sure it matches the sales draft
  • Compare the number pre-printed on the card to the first four numbers of the raised account number
